༻Vampires

Vampires can be commonly found all across the US and are believed to have been harbored into the west from within traveling human settler groups. Vampires demand the consumption of human blood to thrive, while animal blood may be subsituted it is needed in much larger quantities. It is also much less appealing in flavor and cannot sustain a vampire as long as human blood might. A vampire can feed on a human without killing them, but many follow an old-world belief that the victims must die to absorb their 'life essence'.

It is in every respect legal to kill a vampire within the state of Montana, but recent steps have been made towards the acceptance of vegans (non-human consuming). Vegan vampires may apply for licensing to protect themselves from state-employed vampire hunters. However, the process to do so is extensive and costly- and most legally recognized vampires are paid lower wages and often refused boarding within the city. For this reason, most vegans will opt to simply mask their vampirism.

༻Werewolves

Werewolves are the most socially accepted species of non-human and often work closely along side mortal companions. Werewolves were already native to the west and formed close alliances with neighboring settlements. Many packs have formed and dissolved through the centuries, but currently the only operating pack is the Freepelts, living on the outskirts of Wolfreach. Many werewolves find work within the village as livestock guardians or even farmhands. The more traditional of the species prefer to evade human towns and favor living a more 'wild' and 'undomesticated' lifestyle.

Werewolves may pack-bond with any species, though it is often frowned upon within werewolf society to venture outside their own kind. Werewolves traditionally mate for life and have many complex courting and mating customs.

༻Harpies

Harpies are considered one of the more hazardous species within the Valley. Harpies mostly reside within the rocky mountains of the Pale Ranges but can somtimes venture into the valley for food. They are an extremely territorial genus and percieve trespassing as a threat. Harpies tend to live in small flocks but have been known to be solitary hunters as well. While not much is known of harpy behavior due to their hostility, they are believed to mate via forming life-long harems. These harems may be comprised of any genders and are formed by the presenting of a flight feather to a potential mate.

Harpies of the western US often resemble native birds of prey such as owls and hawks. The grays and whites displayed in their feathers provide them with the camoflogue neccesary to hunt within the rocky terrain. Like owls their also possess an excessive level of downy feathers to provide warmth from the harsh Montana temperatures.

༻Merpeople

Merfolk are an elusive genus within the valley, but are known to be very populace in the salt waters of the south. Fresh water merpeople are much smaller and quicker than their ocean-living counterparts, roughly the size of the typical human-being. Merfolk are usually reserved and have only rarely been known to attack human boats, likely accidental incidents due to their poor vision. The valley merfolk can strictly be found within the Hellwater lake which stretches over 200,000 acres. They can sometimes be spotted hunting for trout from fishing ships, using their clawed nails and piranha-like teeth.

Merfolk exist within a matriarchal society in which females choose the mates and dominate packs. They tend to be non-monogamous and mate via seasons but are free to copulate between for pleasure. Fresh water merfolk speak a language similar to that spoken by those in the oceans with slight differences in accent. Many merfolk in the valley may know broken english because of their closer proximity to human life.
